How Canadian Immigration Points Work

Canada uses points-based systems to evaluate and rank immigration candidates. Each province and federal program has its own scoring criteria, but they all assess similar factors: your education, language ability, work experience, age, and connections to Canada.

The Express Entry system, managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to score candidates out of a maximum 1,200 points. Candidates with the highest scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency through regular draws held approximately every two weeks.

In addition to Express Entry, each Canadian province operates its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Provinces like Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario can nominate candidates who meet their specific labour market needs. Receiving a provincial nomination adds a significant 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next draw.

Our calculators give you an accurate estimate based on the latest program criteria. After completing any calculator, you receive a personalized PDF report with your score breakdown, category-by-category analysis, and expert recommendations. The calculators are free, take 2–3 minutes, and require no account or login.

Whether you are exploring options or ready to apply, knowing your score is the essential first step. Start with the Express Entry CRS Calculator if you are unsure, or select a specific provincial calculator above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Canadian immigration points and our calculators.

What is a good CRS score for Express Entry?
A competitive CRS score depends on the draw. In 2025–2026, general draws have had cutoffs ranging from 430 to 530 points. Category-based draws for healthcare, STEM, and French speakers can have different thresholds. A score above 470 gives you a strong chance. Use our CRS Calculator to find your score.
Are these immigration calculators free?
Yes, all seven calculators are completely free. Calculate your score as many times as you like. You will also receive a personalized PDF report with your detailed breakdown and improvement tips.
How accurate are these points calculators?
Our calculators are built on official scoring criteria published by IRCC and each provincial government. They provide a reliable estimate. Your actual score may vary based on documentation and test results. For a precise assessment, book a consultation with one of our licensed consultants.
What is a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)?
PNPs allow Canadian provinces to nominate individuals for permanent residence who meet their specific economic needs. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your Express Entry CRS score. Our calculators cover Alberta (AAIP), British Columbia (BC PNP), Manitoba (MPNP), Saskatchewan (SINP), and Ontario (OINP).
How can I improve my immigration score?
The most effective ways include improving language test scores (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF), obtaining higher education credentials, gaining additional work experience, securing a valid Canadian job offer, or applying for a provincial nomination. Our PDF reports include personalized tips based on your profile.
Which immigration program should I choose?
The best program depends on your education, work experience, language skills, age, and Canadian connections. Express Entry is the fastest pathway for skilled workers. If your CRS score is below the cutoff, a PNP can boost it by 600 points. Start with the CRS Calculator, then explore provincial options.
How long does Canadian immigration take?
Express Entry applications are typically processed within 6 months after receiving an ITA. Provincial Nominee Programs may take 6–18 months depending on the province. Knowing your score and eligibility is the first step, which our calculators help you determine in minutes.
