What Is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)?

The AAIP is Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program, allowing the province to nominate skilled workers and entrepreneurs for Canadian permanent residency. Previously known as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), it was rebranded in 2022 to reflect Alberta’s growing role in attracting global talent.

Alberta offers several immigration streams including the Alberta Express Entry Stream, which selects candidates directly from the federal Express Entry pool, and the Alberta Opportunity Stream for workers already employed in Alberta. A provincial nomination through AAIP adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile, virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply.

AAIP Scoring Criteria

The Alberta Express Entry Stream uses its own selection criteria to identify candidates from the Express Entry pool. Factors considered include your connection to Alberta (family, previous work/study in the province), your occupation being on Alberta’s demand list, your education level, language proficiency, and work experience. The province issues Notifications of Interest (NOIs) to candidates who meet their criteria.

Why Choose Alberta?

Alberta has one of Canada’s strongest job markets, particularly in energy, technology, healthcare, and agriculture. Edmonton and Calgary regularly rank among Canada’s most affordable major cities with high quality of life. Alberta also has no provincial sales tax, meaning higher take-home income compared to most other provinces.

Alberta AAIP Calculator — FAQ

What CRS score do I need for the Alberta Express Entry Stream?
Alberta does not publish a fixed CRS cutoff. Instead, the province issues Notifications of Interest based on occupation, Alberta connections, and other factors. Candidates with CRS scores as low as 300 have received NOIs when their occupation matches Alberta’s needs.
Do I need a job offer to apply through AAIP?
For the Alberta Express Entry Stream, you do not need a job offer, but having one strengthens your profile. For the Alberta Opportunity Stream, you must be currently working in Alberta with a valid work permit.
What occupations does Alberta target?
Alberta targets occupations in health care, technology, construction, manufacturing, aviation, agriculture, and Rural Renewal communities. The province updates its demand list periodically. Having an occupation on this list significantly increases your chances of receiving a Notification of Interest.
How long does the AAIP process take?
After receiving a Notification of Interest, you have 14 days to accept. The provincial nomination application is then processed within approximately 2–3 months. Once nominated, the 600 CRS points are added to your Express Entry profile, and you can expect an ITA in the next federal draw.
Can I apply to AAIP from outside Canada?
Yes. The Alberta Express Entry Stream accepts candidates both inside and outside Canada. However, having Alberta connections — such as family, previous work experience, or a job offer in the province — strengthens your profile significantly.
