What is AAIP?

✓ Reviewed by TopNation’s CICC-licensed RCIC team · Last reviewed: June 2026 · Our credentials

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), designed to help Alberta employers recruit and retain foreign workers while providing skilled immigrants with a pathway to permanent residence in Canada.

Previously known as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), the program was renamed AAIP in 2022 but continues to serve the same critical purpose: addressing Alberta's labor market needs while helping qualified candidates achieve Canadian permanent residence faster than through Express Entry alone.

The AAIP Advantage

  • 600 CRS points added to your Express Entry profile with a provincial nomination
  • 6,403 nominations allocated for 2026 across all AAIP streams
  • Priority processing for Alberta's in-demand occupations
  • Direct pathway to permanent residence without needing a high CRS score
  • Edmonton-based consultants with local labor market expertise

AAIP Eligibility Requirements

While each AAIP stream has specific requirements, most pathways share these common eligibility criteria:

Valid Job Offer

Most AAIP streams require a full-time, permanent job offer from an Alberta employer in an eligible occupation (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4). The job offer must meet Alberta's wage standards.

Work Experience

Candidates typically need 12-24 months of work experience in their nominated occupation. Alberta Opportunity Stream requires experience specifically in Alberta.

Language Requirements

Minimum CLB 4-5 in English or French depending on your occupation's NOC TEER level. Higher language scores strengthen your application and may be required for regulated professions.

Education Credentials

Minimum high school diploma for most streams. Post-secondary education improves your application. Foreign credentials must have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

Settlement Funds

Demonstrate sufficient funds to support yourself and your family in Alberta. Amount varies by family size (approximately $13,000-20,000 CAD for most applicants).

Intention to Reside

Show genuine intention to live and work in Alberta permanently. Strong ties to Alberta (family, property, community involvement) significantly strengthen your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about AAIP and Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program.

What is the difference between AAIP and AINP?

AAIP (Alberta Advantage Immigration Program) is the new name for AINP (Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program). The program was renamed in 2022 but continues to operate with the same core purpose: helping Alberta employers recruit foreign workers and helping skilled workers obtain permanent residence in Canada through provincial nomination. All previous AINP streams now operate under the AAIP banner.

How long does AAIP processing take?

AAIP nomination processing typically takes 4-6 months from application submission to nomination decision. After receiving your provincial nomination, the federal PR application takes an additional 6-12 months. Total timeline from AAIP application to permanent residence is approximately 10-18 months. Processing times vary by stream and application complexity.

Can I apply to AAIP without a job offer?

Most AAIP streams require a valid job offer from an Alberta employer. The Alberta Express Entry Stream is the primary pathway that does not require a job offer - it selects candidates directly from the federal Express Entry pool based on Alberta's labor market needs and priority occupations. All other streams (Opportunity, Rural Renewal, Tourism & Hospitality, Farm) require job offers.

What is the Alberta Opportunity Stream?

The Alberta Opportunity Stream is AAIP's most popular pathway, representing over 70% of all 2026 nominations issued so far. It allows temporary foreign workers currently employed in Alberta to apply for provincial nomination. You must have a valid job offer in an eligible occupation, 12+ months of work experience in Alberta, meet language requirements (CLB 4-5), and have at least a high school education. This stream is ideal for workers who are already established in Alberta.

How many CRS points does AAIP nomination add?

An AAIP provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile. This places you above every recent Express Entry cut-off, so an Invitation to Apply (ITA) almost always follows, as 600 points brings most candidates well above typical cutoff scores of 480-530 points. For example, if your current CRS score is 400, an AAIP nomination brings you to 1,000 points - ensuring you receive an ITA.

Can I apply to AAIP if I'm outside Canada?

Yes, you can apply to the Alberta Express Entry Stream from outside Canada if you're already in the federal Express Entry pool. However, most other AAIP streams (Alberta Opportunity Stream, Rural Renewal, Tourism & Hospitality) require you to be working in Alberta on a valid work permit at the time of application. The Farm Stream allows applications from outside Canada if you meet the business investment requirements.
